Carbonsynk representative Yiwen Zhang to showcase climate-tech advances at AGU24 in Washington, D.C.
Carbonsynk representative Yiwen Zhang presented two new studies on climate solutions and sustainability metrics at this week’s American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting (AGU24), the world’s largest Earth- and space-science conference. The meeting runs from 9–13 December at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and is expected to draw more than 25,000 delegates from over 100 countries.
Enhanced rock weathering for resilient supply chains
On Wednesday afternoon the research team will unveil poster GC33A-0149, “Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) Carbon Insetting in Southeast Asia for Sustainable Supply Chains: Life-Cycle Analysis and Techno-Economic Assessment.” Led by PhD candidate Reno Zhengxin He and Professor Simon Redfern, the study evaluates how finely ground silicate waste—applied to cropland—can capture carbon dioxide while improving soil fertility. Using life-cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA), the authors demonstrate that large-scale ERW programmes in Southeast Asia could deliver negative emissions at a cost competitive with conventional carbon offsets, while boosting regional fertiliser security.
Linking ESG drivers to the UN’s environmental SDGs
On Friday afternoon the same group will present poster GC53F-0421, “Global Correlations and Policy Implications: How to Improve Environmental Sustainable Development Goals (Env-SDGs) through Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Factors.” Co-authored with Associate Professor Román Carrasco, the work mines more than a decade of ESG disclosures and national SDG indicators to map how corporate environmental performance influences progress on SDG-related targets such as clean water, biodiversity and climate action. The analysis identifies policy levers—ranging from mandatory emissions reporting to green-bond incentives—that could accelerate SDG gains, particularly in emerging economies.
Invitation to discuss
Both posters will be on display in the in-person poster hall and the online gallery. Delegates interested in ERW, LCA, TEA, ESG or SDG research are encouraged to visit the authors for informal discussion during the afternoon sessions. AGU24 poster blocks run from 14:10 to 18:30 local time each day.
AGU24’s overarching theme, “What’s Next for Science,” emphasises open, inclusive and solution-oriented research—a goal the Singapore team says aligns closely with its cross-disciplinary approach to climate mitigation and sustainable development.
